Remembering Soror Carrie Meek

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated joins the country in mourning the loss of member and trailblazing politician Carrie Meek who made her transition on November 28, 2021. Carrie Meek, daughter of a sharecropper and the granddaughter of a slave, was one of the first African-American lawmakers to represent Florida in Congress since the Reconstruction Era. As a devoted public servant, Soror Meek was committed to using her position to fight against injustices throughout the state of Florida. She championed causes including health care, education, jobs, and housing to create a more equitable quality of life for the communities where she lived, served, and represented. A proud alumnus of Florida A&M University, Soror Meek was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta at the Beta Alpha Chapter in 1946.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will remain committed to being a force for social action, using her legacy and words, “…Until we do all we can to improve the character of our communities, we’ll never break the cycle of violence and indifference,” as guidance.

The Omega Omega Service for Soror Meek is scheduled for Monday, December 6, at 4:30 pm at Miami Dade College – North Campus (William and Joan Lehman Theater | 11380 NW 27th Avenue | Miami, Florida 33167)
